More customers have reportedly gotten E. coli after eating at McDonald’s.
NBC News reports that at least 75 people became ill after eating Quarter Pounders at locations in 13 states. Twenty-two people have been hospitalized and one person has died from the deadly E. coli strain.
“I think there will most certainly be more illnesses reported,” Matt Wise, chief of the CDC’s Outbreak Response and Prevention Branch, said. On Tuesday, the number of sick people was 49, and 10 of those people had been hospitalized.
All 42 of the people whom public health officials spoke with said they had eaten at McDonald’s before becoming ill, and most had “specifically mentioned eating a Quarter Pounder hamburger,” a statement from the CDC said.
Two of the people who became sick have a kidney condition called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can result in permanent kidney failure or can be fatal.
The offender on McDonald’s Quarter Pounders were likely the slivered onions, though the beef patties could also be contaminated. On Thursday, the fast food chain shared that the onions were purchased from Taylor Farms. The Quarter Pounders are the only menu item that uses these particular slivered onions, and they have since removed them from locations in at least 12 states.
Other chain restaurants that use the onions—including Taco Bell, Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Illegal Pete’s—removed the onions from food items. No illnesses have been connected to these eateries.
